Matthew 5.4
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Personal Reflections For someone who belongs to the kingdom, “mourning” refers to the deep grief that comes from one’s stark realisation of one’s fallenness and brokenness. Only when one is fully aware of how one’s sins have caused pain and suffering to God can one fully appreciate and be comforted by the coming of Christ for one’s sins, as alluded to in Is 61.2-3. (Mourning, however, does not mean that as Christians we have to pull a “long face” and look sad all the time. It refers rather to an inner posture of humility and brokenness.)
Are you conscious and constantly grieved by and mourning over your own sins and brokenness?
