Matthew 4.1-4
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’
Personal Reflections It is interesting that 4.1 started with “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit …” as if to tell us that this pericope is intentionally inserted between Jesus’ baptism and the start of His ministry. For Jesus, His ministry was founded on the Father-Son relationship we saw in 3.17, and not on His own ability to turn stones into bread. Jesus dealt with this temptation in the way we should deal with ours – by depending on God and His Word.
What do you depend on when it comes to accomplishing what you are called to do? Is it based on your own ability, intellect, education, skills or training or on God alone, who in turn endows you with assets and uses them for His disposal?
